Fort McHenry appears in a late afternoon sun in front of a hazy Baltimore, Maryland background providing a unique view of this famous star fort that successfully defended the city during the war of 1812. The actual Battle of Baltimore occurred in mid September of 1814 and had the British warship bombarding the city for an entire day and night.
A Baltimore lawyer, Francis Scott Key, was being held on a British ship in the outer harbor. When dawn broke he could see the fort's flag flying proudly in the rising sun. That inspired him to write the poem that eventually became our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner.
